Some patients had inquired about egg freezing as a way of preserving fertility. In general, it is more of a “last resort” used by patients about to undergo cancer treatment, for example, as an attempt to preserve fertility. Eggs (oocytes) are not as easy to freeze as embryos (fertilized eggs) or sperms because of its high water content, hence an increased chance for cellular damage during the freezing and thawing processes. Most experts still consider egg freezing experimental, but many are optimistic of what it can offer, given the advances and success stories. An organization that may be a helpful resource for patients undergoing cancer treatments is FertileHope, a non-profit organization. Their web address is www.FertileHope.org. Our center has been receiving inquiries and providing assistance to their members.
